Top Organic Produce to Buy

The subject of purchasing organic produce was brought to my attention by a friend. Sagan and Stephanie already posted excellent information on this subject, but I feel this is a subject worth repeating because it affects all of us!

So! You want to buy organic, but you want to stay within your budget too. Well, it is possible; you just have to plan accordingly.

If you want to go organic but still stay on budget, buy the organic varieties of the foods that are otherwise exposed to/absorb the most pesticides. The most highly contaminated produce* includes:

  • Peaches - among the highest in pesticides
  • Apples
  • Bell peppers
  • Celery
  • Nectarines
  • Strawberries
  • Cherries
  • Lettuce
  • Grapes
  • Pears
  • Spinach
  • Potatoes

All of the above are the most highly contaminated produce when it comes to pesticides, and even thorough washing won't rid these foods of the contaminates.

Produce that tends to be lower in pesticides include those with thicker skins that protect the inner flesh:

  • Onions
  • Avocado
  • Mango
  • Pineapples
  • Asparagus
  • Kiwi
  • Banana
  • Cabbage
  • Corn - yet almost all corn is genetically modified

Also, look for the USDA Organic label on the food item to make sure it really is organic.

If a food product states,“100% Organic,” it was made with 100% organic ingredients.

If the label reads, “Organic,” the product was made with at least 95% organic ingredients.

Only these two are allowed display the USDA Organic label.

Check out the USDA National Organic Program for further information on organic products and the Environmental Working Group's Food News for a fuller list of the most to least contaminated produce.
