As of late, I've been trying to avoid foods with high fructose corn syrup. But, my goodness, this stuff is everywhere!
It's the main ingredient in the lite syrup I drizzle on my occasional weekend, wheat-protein-powder-added pancakes.
It's in the fruit spread I use on homemade whole wheat toast.
It's in the cranberry-apple "fruit" juice I water down to lessen calories.
I went through my pantry and fridge and found high fructose corn syrup in the ketchup, "natural" granola bars, lite salad dressings, and the barbecue sauce I really like. Oh, pooh!
I'm surprised. Many of the foods I have in the house are not as healthy as I once assumed. My eyes have been opened. I'm going to start reading labels more judiciously!

I was just talking about this last week with some friends. It’s even in bread! BREAD! I had to search and search for bread without it. So frustrating!!!
Emily,
Oh, I forgot about bread, so good point! I usually make bread in my bread machine. I prefer this since I can control what goes in it!
I was going to mention bread to. And BBQ sauce. *frustrated*
I never understand why there’s a few ingredients like high fructose corn syrup that just seem to pop up EVERYWHERE (like the dreaded hydrogenated/partially hydrogenated oil!). I mean, what did we do before these things were invented?! It’s amazing what you learn when you start reading ingredient lists.
they are ALL OVER.
and I still eat them (mainly by accident) so I just try and avoid when I can.
you can make yourself crazy with this stuff huh?
M.
Frustrating – yes, it can be, especially when trying to avoid sugars and other additives. Learning where this stuff lurks is one step. Staying away from prepackaged foods, especially sweets, is another. Unless you can grow your own food or buy everything fresh and without added chemicals (love this idea but not the most feasible), you just do the best you can and try not to let it drive you crazy!
Oh, you’re so right Susan! I was surprised at how many of the 100% whole wheat breads have the stuff too, like Emily pointed out. I’m just not motivated yet to start making my own loaves, although I keep saying I want to try it.
I probably wouldn’t make as much homemade bread as I do if it were not for the bread machine! I love it! My bread machine makes baking homemade bread very easy. I just throw in the ingredients and let it be. I received the bread machine as a Christmas gift from my parents a couple of years ago. It wise gift, let me tell you!
