Fortunately, what we often believe to be abnormally heavy menstrual period bleeding is actually not excessive enough that it needs to be diagnosed as being menorrhagia.

So how do you know when the bleeding that you are experiencing during your menstruation is actually a heavy menstrual period? The easiest way for you to know whether or not you are experiencing what is known as menorrhagia is to pay attention to how often you need to change out your tampon or your pad. If your heavy menstrual period is strong enough that you're required to change out your pad or tampon every hour or every two hours or more, or if you are dealing with a menstrual period that lasts for a period of longer than a week, then you could possibly be experiencing menorrhagia, or an abnormally heavy menstrual period.

Here are some of the most common causes behind the heavy menstrual period:

A heavy menstrual period may be caused during a period of hormonal imbalance, especially during adolescence, peri-menopause or menopause. This is actually the most common reason why a heavy menstrual period would occur.

Fibroid tumors in the uterus are another common cause for a heavy menstrual period. These tumors are typically benign, meaning that they are non-cancerous, and they are commonly occurring within the uterus of a woman between the ages of 30 and 50. The cause of these fibroid tumors is unknown, but it is known that they are dependent on estrogen.

Another cause of a heavy menstrual period is cervical polyps, which are small and fragile growths that begin in the cervix or within the endocervical canal, protruding into the cervix opening. The cause is not clear, but they are often present as a result of an infection.

Endometrial polyps are a non-cancerous cause for heavy menstrual period. These are growths that protrude out from the lining of your uterus, and their cause is currently unclear, though these polyps tend to be associated with an excess amount of estrogen in the body following treatment with hormones.

Lupus may also cause a heavy menstrual period, and is a chronic inflammatory disorder and an autoimmune disorder that affects the body, especially the kidneys, the joints, the blood and the skin. The causes of lupus are currently unclear, though doctors believe that many patients have a genetic predisposition to the illness.

PID or Pelvic Inflammatory Disease, Endometrial Cancer and Cervical Cancer are all also causes of having a heavy menstrual period. If you suspect that one of these illnesses may be the cause of your heavy menstrual period, you should consult a physician for more tests.

Tips for Clean Skin Treatment http://nutritionfitnesslife.com/tips-for-clean-skin-treatment/ http://nutritionfitnesslife.com/tips-for-clean-skin-treatment/#comments Thu, 23 Jun 2011 17:46:07 +0000 Keira http://nutritionfitnesslife.com/?p=462 facewashIf you are interested in having clear and beautiful skin, then there are two different facets of a clear skin treatment plan that you need to implement every day. You are going to need to have a solid clear skin treatment routine and you need to have the right skin care products as part of this treatment. In order to maintain beautiful and clear skin you are going to need to be completely consistent when it comes to your skin care routine. Everyone has a basic idea of how to wash their face, tone their face and use topical treatments, but there are two tips for clear skin treatment that many people overlook, and as a result, they never know how to master their skin care treatment.

First of all, it is vitally important that we wash our faces properly.
We need to know what our skin type is, and we need to choose products that are designated specifically for our skin type. When it comes to looking for a face wash product, you need to find something that has a medicated product in it if you have acne that you want to reduce.

If you have skin that is on the sensitive side, then you may need to find a mild type of medicated face wash. If your skin is on the dry side, then you are also going to want to find a milder type of medicated face wash. If you have severe acne or oilier skin, then you may want to look for a stronger face wash product. It is generally a good idea for you to check the labels out, to make sure that the product that you are buying is indicated for your skin type and situation. Some products are intended for oily skin, while others are intended for dry skin, and others still are best suited for sensitive skin - Make sure that you are choosing the right product and that you are not over washing your face, because washing your face too often can actually make your problems worse.

After you wash your face properly, the second step involves knowing how to close your pores, which often involves using a toner. Do not use toners that contain alcohol because this can exacerbate the problem. Alcohol is a drying agent, and dry skin causes scratching, which causes skin problems. Scratching easily leads to inflammation, and this is going to make the problem worse.

It is also vitally important that you use moisturizer and that you get enough water, as these things play a large role in having clear and beautiful skin. Your face absolutely needs to have enough moisture, so you should by hydrating your skin properly every day by choosing a moisturizer that does not have any oils in it. You should also be getting a minimum of 80 ounces of water per day, which is 10 8-oz glasses. This will keep your skin soft, supple and beautiful.

Skin Care Advice for Dry Skin http://nutritionfitnesslife.com/skin-care-advice-for-dry-skin/ http://nutritionfitnesslife.com/skin-care-advice-for-dry-skin/#comments Sat, 18 Jun 2011 10:22:06 +0000 Keira http://nutritionfitnesslife.com/?p=594 moisturizIf you have dry skin, and you're ready to get rid of it once and for all, then this is the skin care advice for you. There is absolutely nothing worse in the world than having skin that is dry, itchy and uncomfortable. Dry skin is capable of happening at any time throughout the year, but it seems to become much more prevalent during the winter months. Here is what you need to know about dry skin, and the skin care advice that you need to overcome your dry skin once and for all:

Why is dry skin so common in the winter? - In the winter months, the low temperature, the low humidity and the strong winds all work hard to deplete your skin of its natural lipids layer, which is what is responsible for keeping your skin nicely moisturized throughout the rest of the year. There are other things that suck the moisture out of your skin including the dry air from your furnace or another heating source.

Skin Care Advice for Dry Skin

1. Keep your water lukewarm rather than hot, because hot water is capable of robbing your skin of the moisture that it needs, causing your skin to become dry. If you must have a hot shower, try keeping your showering to a minimum and try to shower only once every day. Skip the hot tub, too, because the hot water and the chemicals can really be torture for already dry skin.

2. Make sure that you are moisturizing your skin after your showers or washing your hands, because moisturizer is truly the key when it comes to maintaining skin that is soft and supple. Apply the moisturizing product while your skin is still partially damp. For the best possible effect, you should pat your skin dry rather than rubbing it with your towel before you apply the lotion or moisturizing product.

3. Make sure that you are exfoliating on a weekly basis, or semi-weekly. Moisturizing products are going to be significantly more effective when you use them on skin that has been fully and properly exfoliated. You should be using a scrub in your shower and you should be exfoliating the skin on your face using a mild scrubbing product intended specifically for your face. Scrubbing your skin is best done when the skin is dry, surprisingly enough. Apply the scrub to your skin while it is dry, before you turn the shower on. If it is not moist enough for this, mix it with some motion. Massage the scrub in your skin for a few minutes in order to get the best possible results.

This skin care advice makes up the foundation for improving your dry skin once and for all.

Understanding Menstrual Cycle Cramps http://nutritionfitnesslife.com/understanding-menstrual-cycle-cramps/ http://nutritionfitnesslife.com/understanding-menstrual-cycle-cramps/#comments Fri, 17 Jun 2011 09:53:42 +0000 Keira http://nutritionfitnesslife.com/?p=562 pincushionMost women experience what is known as dysmenorrhea or menstrual cycle cramps from time to time. These menstrual cycle cramps are a common cause for women to seek out medical attention because the pain that comes from these menstrual cycle cramps can easily range from very mild to very severe, and they can span the lower abdomen and back, and even into the thighs as well. In addition to menstrual cycle cramps, you may also experience nausea, headaches, fainting, dizziness, constipation or diarrhea in conjunction with your cramping.

During your menstrual cycle, the lining of your uterus is going to produce a hormone that is known as prostaglandin. This hormone is responsible for causing the uterus to contract, and it is often painful in the process. Women that experience severe menstrual cycle cramps may be experiencing these greater than normal cramps as a result of higher than typical amounts of prostaglandin in the body, or they may simply be abnormally sensitive to the effects of the hormone on the body.

These menstrual cycle cramps are especially common in your teen years, as this is when you first begin to experience menstrual cycles, or periods. The term Primary Dysmenorrhea is used in order to describe painful menstrual cycle cramps that have no perceptible physical cause. This disorder is diagnosed most commonly in women between 20 years and 24 years of age, and it typically has gone away within one or two years, after hormonal balance has occurred.

Another term that you need to know is Secondary Dismenorrhea, which is a term that is used to describe the painful menstrual cycle cramps that are caused by some physical problem that is separate from the menstruation. There are a number of physical problems capable of causing this form of cramping, including non cancerous growths, endometriosis, infections in the pelvic area, the use of an IUD or intrauterine device, problems resulting from pregnancy and structural problems that were present during birth, also known as congenital birth defects.

There are also cramps that resemble menstrual cycle cramps that are capable of occurring following a medical procedure. Some examples of medical procedures that may cause cramps similar to menstrual cycle cramps are cautery, conization, cryotherapy, radiation, IUD insertion and endometrial biopsy.

When you experience other symptoms of menstruation, such as headache, weight gain and head tension occurring before your period actually begins, these are likely the result of PMS, which stands for premenstrual syndrome. There are medications and treatments that you can make use of in order to lessen the symptoms experienced during pre-menstruation and menstruation. If you believe that you are experiencing symptoms that are atypical of menstruation, or if you are experiencing menstrual cycle cramps that are severe, consult a family physician or gynecologist for advice.

Causes of an Irregular Menstrual Period http://nutritionfitnesslife.com/causes-of-an-irregular-menstrual-period/ http://nutritionfitnesslife.com/causes-of-an-irregular-menstrual-period/#comments Tue, 14 Jun 2011 08:26:15 +0000 Keira http://nutritionfitnesslife.com/?p=549 splashMost of the time, when a woman experiences a irregular menstrual period, the causes behind it are completely benign. There are a number of occasions where you may experience an irregular menstrual period, including missing a period, having periods too infrequently, experiencing spotting between periods or experiencing a bout of heavy bleeding and clotting. Most of these irregular menstrual period situations are caused by a hormonal imbalance that is an underlying cause and that can be treated relatively easily.

Most of us have had an occasion where we missed a period. Sometimes this leads us to anticipate pregnancy while others only feel anxiety as a result. Some women seem to menstruate just like clockwork while others go their entire lives without ever seeming to have a normal or typical menstrual cycle. There is one thing that is a given, however, and that is that shifts in the balance of our hormones can easily alter our menstrual pattern, causing what we have experienced in the past to no longer be the norm, and making irregular menstrual period situations the norm. Many of these irregular menstrual period experiences are especially common when you reach perimenopause, which is the stage that comes before full blown menopause.

So what is an irregular menstrual period?

Questions are asked about irregular menstrual periods all the time. A textbook menstrual cycle occurs every 24 to 29 days, but what is a "regular" menstrual period actually covers a much wider range than this. Menstrual cycles that occur between 23 days and 35 days are actually quite common in nature. A woman may only get her period between once and four times every year, or she may even experience periods that occur between two and three times every month, involving an extremely heavy menstrual flow or spotting in between. Alternately, a woman can also have heavy bleeding episodes only every two months to three months. So the truth about what an irregular menstrual period is, is that it is only irregular if it is not the norm for you and your body.

For the most part, a single missed period or a couple of missed periods every year is nothing to raise alarms over. There are a wide variety of different factors that are capable of being responsible for irregular menstrual periods. Among them includes significant weight loss or weight gain, exercising too often, poor nutrition, drug use, smoking, too much caffeine, excessive use of alcohol, eating disorders, an increase in stress, Uterine abnormalities such as fibroids, polyps or cysts, certain medications, recently having gone through childbirth, breastfeeding, having a recent miscarriage, premenopausal hormonal imbalance or polycystic ovarian syndrome.

As should be evident at this point, there are a number of different causes for an irregular menstrual period in women, and they can occur for a multitude of different reasons. While it can be confusing when you experience a irregular menstrual period, you should only consult a physician if it becomes a regular occurrence.

Easy Antidotes for Menstrual Cramps http://nutritionfitnesslife.com/easy-antidotes-for-menstrual-cramps/ http://nutritionfitnesslife.com/easy-antidotes-for-menstrual-cramps/#comments Mon, 13 Jun 2011 07:35:17 +0000 Keira http://nutritionfitnesslife.com/?p=446 menstrualcrampsIf you are suffering from menstrual cramps, then the truth is that you are likely suffering needlessly. Here is a handful of antidotes that will help you alleviate your menstrual cramps once and for all. No longer do you need to suffer from those terrible pains during that special time of the month.

- * Find Balance - Finding balance in the form of a healthy diet may not completely cure cramps, but it can actually work wonders for your sense of being over all, making you feel better. This is going to mean cutting out the sweet and salty junk foods, even when your cravings are the worst ever. Nobody needs to feel sluggish or bloated during menstruation, so shoot for fruits and vegetables, lean meats like chicken and fish, and healthy snacks that will give you a healthier feeling over all.

- * Take Vitamins. - When women are getting a healthier dose of vitamins and minerals on a daily basis, they tend to notice fewer problems relating to menstrual cramps. Make sure that you are taking a daily vitamin and mineral supplement, and look for one that comes in small doses and offers calcium.

- * Get Adequate Minerals - If you are getting enough of the minerals potassium, calcium and magnesium, you will be much more likely to find relief from your menstrual cramps. Women who get enough calcium suffer far less when it comes to menstrual cramps in comparison to those that do not. Magnesium is also important because it allows for the more effective absorption of calcium.

- * Avoid Caffeine - The caffeine that is found in tea, coffee, soda pop and chocolate can actually contribute to your menstrual cramp discomfort because they make you feel more nervous or jittery. The oils found in coffee are also capable of irritating your intestines for an increase in discomfort.

- * Kick the Alcohol Habit - If you are retaining water while you are on your period, then drinking alcohol is really only going to add to the problems that you are already dealing with. If you have to drink, keep it limited and stick to a glass or two of a light type of wine.

- * Mineral Bathing - Create a health spa of your very own by creating a relaxing bath that you can use to relax your muscles and to relieve your cramps. Add a cup worth of sea salt and a cup worth of baking soda to warm water and give your entire body a good 20 minute soak for the best results.

- * Go For a Walk - If you walk or if you engage in some other form of moderate exercise, then when your period arrives it will be a lot more manageable than if you are not getting any moderate exercise in your lifestyle.

Better Than Barbie – Positive Dolls for Girls http://nutritionfitnesslife.com/positive-image-dolls-for-girls/ http://nutritionfitnesslife.com/positive-image-dolls-for-girls/#comments Wed, 01 Jun 2011 14:04:57 +0000 Susan http://nutritionfitnesslife.com/2008/05/27/positive-image-dolls-for-girls/ I previously posted the measurements of the average woman compared to Barbie's. This spurred comments regarding Barbie as a poor choice of dolls for young girls.

That got me to thinking... Which dolls present positive images to girls - that are not all about ginormous ta-tas and itty bitty waists? What would I want to give to my little nieces? To my daughters?

So off I went to 'research' this conundrum, and I made the following list of dolls I thought give a more positive image than Barbie. I noticed that, overall, these dolls are more expensive, which is unfortunate. However, I believe they are also of greater quality. If you know any other great dolls for girls (and boys too), please let me know!

Girls Explore

Girls Explore

Girls Explore dolls personify actual women in history, complete with period clothing and biography. Amelia Earhart, Harriet Tubman, and Dot Richardson are among the historical lineup.

Now, these are not glamorous dolls. There are no ball gowns, sparkles, and makeup. They're also $55.00 a piece. However, they ofter a unique peak into history and the importance women have had in shaping it.

Only Hearts ClubOnly Hearts Club

Thanks to Lynnae from beingfrugal.net for mentioning these great dolls. Only Hearts Club features dolls that are girls from different ethnic backgrounds with a wide array of interests, from horseback riding, music, cooking, and math. They are appropriately dressed and come with their own pet. They are approx $16.00 each.

American Girl

American Girl Dolls - MollyI remember when these dolls from when I was a preteen, and I thought they were beautiful. Only three different dolls were offered at that time, but the American Girl company have since grown to include not only dolls from different periods in history, but baby dolls, dolls that resemble their young owner, clothing, books, and accessories. An American Girl Place, a museum/store/restaurant, is located in Chicago, Los Angeles, and New York. And now there's a movie coming out featuring Kit, a girl living during the Great Depression.

What I like about the American Girl dolls is how beautiful they are, yet how suited they are for playing. I really like the opportunity for learning about history that is involved with each doll. Each girl has their own story books, clothing, and accessories. My favorite has always been Samantha, from 1904.

The latest addition is Julie from 1974. This "historical" doll is hitting a little too close to home. If they make a doll from 1984, I'm going to start feeling really old!

The dolls cost roughly $90 or more.

P31 Dolls P31 Dolls - Abigail

P31 Dolls are based on the teachings from Proverbs 31 (hence the name P31) and feature three Biblical women, Leah, Abigail, and Elisabeth. However, they are featured as girls and are dressed in modern outfits. The dolls come with a cookie recipe, cookie cutters, and a lesson based on Proverbs 31:20. They cost about $40.00.

Language Littles Speaking Dolls

Language LittlesJust as the name says, Language Littles Speaking Dolls "speak" various words and phrases in their native tongue if you press their hands. Natural Menstrual Cramps Remedies http://nutritionfitnesslife.com/natural-menstrual-cramps-remedies/ http://nutritionfitnesslife.com/natural-menstrual-cramps-remedies/#comments Sun, 27 Mar 2011 04:12:30 +0000 Keira http://nutritionfitnesslife.com/?p=555 redflowersWhen you are dealing with the uncomfortable cramps associated with the menstrual cycle, one of the things that you should be turning your attention to is menstrual cramps remedies. There are a number of unique menstrual cramps remedies that you can utilize in order to remedy your menstrual cramps, or at least make them far less of a burden on your daily life. Every month, the lining of your uterus is responsible for producing chemicals or hormones known as prostaglandins, and these help the muscles in the uterus to contract, expelling tissue as well as fluids from the uterus during the menstruation cycle. Unfortunately, these uterine muscle contractions can be uncomfortable, and are thusly known as menstrual cramps.

Here are some easy things that you can do to remedy your menstrual cramps.

Take Vitamins and Minerals - Many people that get a healthy dose of minerals and vitamins every day report that they have fewer problems relating to cramps, meaning that one of the best menstrual cramps remedies is simply to make sure that you are getting the right dose of vitamins and minerals every day.

Improve Nutritional Balance - Cut out the sweets and the salty foods and make better dietary choices. A healthier diet isn't the end-all when it comes to menstrual cramps remedies, but it definitely does help.

Cut Out the Alcohol and Caffeine - The caffeine that is found in tea and coffee, chocolate and cola can contribute to comfort for menstrual cramps by making you feel more nervous. The oils in the coffee are also capable of irritating your insides, so cut out the caffeine. Alcohol also should be avoid, especially if you have a tendency to retain water during your menstrual cycle as the alcohol is only going to make things worse. If you have to drink, then you should limit yourself to light wine, and only a glass or two.

Warm Up - Warming up is going to increase your flow of blood in your body, and this is going to relax the muscles in your body. This is especially useful when it comes to the cramped and congested area of your pelvis. You should be drinking plenty of hot herbal tea and lemonade, and you may also consider putting a heating pad or a warm bottle of hot water down on your abdomen for a few minutes at a time in order to warm things up.

Aspirin and Acetaminophen - Both Aspirin and Acetaminophen can be taken for relieving cramps. There are also a number of over the counter style medications that you can take including Medipren, Nuprin, Haltran and Advil. These medications contain a chemical known as ibuprofen which helps to inhibit the pain causing actions of the prostaglandins in your uterus.

Understanding Menstrual Period Symptoms http://nutritionfitnesslife.com/understanding-menstrual-period-symptoms/ http://nutritionfitnesslife.com/understanding-menstrual-period-symptoms/#comments Sun, 13 Mar 2011 20:24:37 +0000 Keira http://nutritionfitnesslife.com/?p=552 redtreesIn addition to understanding the phases of your menstrual cycle, and understanding the hormones that are involved in all of the myriad of changes that your body goes through on a monthly basis, it is also important for you to understand what symptoms are actually menstrual period symptoms so that you know what to experience and what to expect. There are both physical and emotional or mental menstrual period symptoms that can affect you, and the truth is that they can affect different women in different ways. Some menstrual period symptoms are merely minor inconveniences while others become a serious disruption to your life and enjoyment. Some women experience menstrual period symptoms that are severe enough that they are prevented from enjoying normal day to day activities.

There are a number of different menstrual period symptoms that can be associated with the menstruation cycle. Generally speaking, there are two different categories that these symptoms can fit into, which are physical menstrual period symptoms and emotional menstrual period symptoms.

Physical Menstrual Period Symptoms - Some of the more common physical menstrual period symptoms include the following:

  • Tenderness in the breasts,
  • Feeling of bloating,
  • Headache or tension in the head,
  • Swelling in the extremities, such as the arms, legs and fingers,
  • Menstrual cramping in the abdomen, back and inner thighs.

Emotional Menstrual Period Symptoms - Surprisingly enough, there are more emotional menstrual period symptoms than physical ones for many women. Some of the different emotional symptoms that are generally associated with your menstrual cycle will include:

  • Changes in your mood,
  • Withdrawal from social activities and gatherings,
  • Confusion and a difficulty with basic concentration tasks,
  • Anxiety and feelings of nervousness,
  • Increased moodiness, irritability, difficulty focusing and a loss of interest in favorite things,
  • Outbursts in anger or an increased tendency to argue or pick fights,
  • Feelings of depression.

If you are experiencing any of the menstrual period symptoms mentioned above, then know that you are not alone. It may be a good idea for you to begin to chart your symptoms using a cycle calendar so that you can keep track of what menstrual period symptoms you are experiencing and when. You need to come to understand how your body is affected by your menstrual cycle in order to make sense of the symptoms that you are feeling. Once you know what menstrual period symptoms are affecting you, you can take steps to better manage your menstrual cycle for less symptoms. This is the best way to make sure that your menstrual period symptoms are not debilitating and do not prevent you from living your life.

Best Facial Skin Care Products: Choosing the Right Cleanser http://nutritionfitnesslife.com/best-facial-skin-care-products-choosing-the-right-cleanser/ http://nutritionfitnesslife.com/best-facial-skin-care-products-choosing-the-right-cleanser/#comments Sun, 13 Mar 2011 08:07:45 +0000 Keira http://nutritionfitnesslife.com/?p=601 cleasnerChoosing the right facial skin care products is of vital importance if you want to get the most out of your products and the best results when it comes to achieving healthy skin. Choosing the right facial cleaner is one such decision that is really going to mean a lot to whether or not you have clear, clean and healthy skin. Here are the best facial skin care product cleansers that you should be considering, and the types of situations that they are ideal for. If you bring home the wrong cleaner, you're not going to be benefiting yourself in any way, and your complexion may suffer for it.

Purpose: Basic Cleanser
Best Product: Purpose Facial Cleaner
Why: You're going to find a lot of different facial skin care products out there, some that cost $50, some $30, and some less than $10. It turns out, the Purpose facial cleanser is an excellent example of good things coming inexpensively. This is an excellent all around cleanser for basic purposes. It is soap free and oil free, and it creates a wonderful lather that takes away dirt, oil and makeup without leaving your skin too dry. By keeping your skin properly moisturized, it prevents your skin from overproducing skin oils which is really nice. This is one I tried a few years ago and now I never go without it.

Purpose: Dry to Normal Skin
Best Product: Cetaphil Cleanser
Why: There are really no bells and whistles involved when it comes to this really mild product that is recommended by dermatologists because of how gentle it is. It is a really simple $10 cleaner that is creamy and natural rather than being loaded up with perfumes and chemicals. There are no skin irritants in this baby, and that means a lot when it comes to cleansing your skin properly.

Purpose: Oily Skin
Best Product: Clinique's Wash Away Gel
Why: Gel cleaners happen to work particularly well when it comes to oily skin because they are capable of absorbing up the excess oil in your skin. This is a truly classic cleanser that is capable of being a bit drying, however, so make sure that you test the product out before you spend a lot of money buying it up.

Purpose: Acne Problems
Best Product: Neutrogena's Oil Free Acne Cleanser
Why: Neutrogena may just be a drugstore based beauty brand, but it is definitely one of the best, and all of the facial skin care products that they produce are going to steer you in the right direction, hands down. You really cannot go wrong with this simple, no frills acne wash which is absolutely ideal for acne stricken skin, especially sensitive skin types.
